Harlingen is home of the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, an eco-tourism and nature festival that has proven a hit since its inception in 1994. Even though it’s called a festival, the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival is not your typical festival that comes to mind. Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival History

In 1994, nature tourism was starting to become more popular all over the country so the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce led the formation of a group of bird enthusiast to bring the very first Rio Grande Festival that year. The festival was proven a major success with over 750 people from all over the nation and even abroad attended. Since then, the main Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival has been held in November of every year and is a place where participants can learn about birds in keynote lectures, seminars and lessons from internationally renowned bird experts. There is also a trade show held as well as education programs for children. Participants also go off on tours all over the Rio Grande Valley to watch different species of birds to experience nature up close.
